The Face of Evil - Rise and Fall of the Third Reich
Saturday June 16th to Sunday June 24th, 2012 (Tour Code 01)
Guides: Nigel Jones and Roger Moorhouse
From £1950 per person
In this ground-breaking tour we follow the rise and fall of the Third Reich by visiting the Munich beer halls where the Nazi Party was founded; the first concentration camp at Dachau; Hitler’s hideaway headquarters at Berchtesgaden in the beautiful Bavarian Alps; Nuremberg - site of the party’s giant pre-war rallies and of the postwar retribution of the War Crimes Trials; Bayreuth, the Reich’s cultural capital; and finally Berlin - scene of both the regime’s merciless rule and of the conflagration that finally consumed it in 1945. "It is hard to imagine a more engaging, challenging and important historical tour" said The Financial Times.
The Road of Blood - From Oradour to the Battle of Normandy
Friday June 8th to Friday June 15th, 2012 (Tour Code 02)
Guide: Nigel Jones
From £1650 per person
This is a tour through the lovely summer countryside of western France telling the dark story of the Das Reich SS Panzer Division and its murderous march from its base at Montauban to its destruction in Normandy in 1944. They were harried and delayed constantly by heroic attacks from the French Resistance and Britain’s spy and sabotage agencies, the SOE and the SAS. Following the exact route of Das Reich we visit the haunting ruins of Oradour-sur-Glane, a village left in ruins to this day in tribute to more than 600 innocents massacred here by the SS. We also see the place where SOE agent Violette ‘carve her name with pride’ Szabo was captured; the French tank Museum at Saumur; hidden SAS and Maquis camps deep in the forests of France, the Normandy landing beaches and the battlefield of Falaise where the struggle with Das Reich reached its climax.
Four Epochs of Berlin - From Prussia to the Cold War
Saturday August 25th to Saturday September 1st, 2012 (Tour Code 03)
Guide: Roger Moorhouse
From £1750 per person
This tour of the vibrant capital of Germany tells the whole - often tragic - history of a city that has been the crucible of European history for more than 250 years. From the gorgeous palaces of Frederick the Great at Potsdam to the graffiti covered remains of the Berlin Wall, this is a journey through the troubled story of modern Europe. Our tour covers four crucial periods of Berlin’s story. We begin with Frederick, the warrior king, who raised Prussia from backward province to European superpower; examine the Berlin of Weimar with its exotic nightlife and artistic creativity, and study the darkest time of all - the city of Hitler and the Third Reich. Finally we look at the Cold War, when the divided city was on the frontline of the global war between Capitalism and Communism.
