Umbria with Dr Sophie Ambler: A Private Group Tour
A small, private group has just returned from Umbria after a fantastic week with Guide Lecturer, Dr Sophie Ambler. Based in fabulous hotels in Orvieto and Spello, they explored Umbria’s stunning hilltop towns with their cathedrals, churches, castles and monasteries. Some of the finest frescos ever created were in evidence with Sophie explaining their significance, the various painting techniques employed and the often colourful lives of their creators.
In addition to the stunning art and architecture, the group visited some of the region’s best wineries with exclusive tastings arranged by our sister company, Arblaster and Clarke. The tour and tasting at Montefalco’s Arnaldo Caprai was a particular highlight, and the group had a chance to sample their brilliant 25-year Sagrantino.
Many of the tasted wines were later enjoyed in the evenings as companions to the sumptuous dinners the group enjoyed, and they were all good matches for the mouth-watering local cuisine, for example spicy stews, suckling pig and truffle pasta.
Praise has been effusive, with one returning guest writing: “I want to thank you directly for arranging a really magnificent holiday. Sophie could not have been more attentive and helpful and we all got on extremely well, not least because she is such a pleasant person who wears her academic knowledge lightly. The whole tour reached a level of perfection that will be difficult to improve and even I, with only a minor interest in the Middle Ages, found the visits really interesting. This is the way to organise a private tour.”
