WWII on the Home Front: Secret Wartime Britain
While Britain’s Armed Forces fought tirelessly in defence of our homeland, a secret war raged on at home. Intelligence gatherers intercepted messages and fed them back to a top team of code-breakers at Bletchley park, in turn feeding information back to those in command to direct Britain’s defences. We learn about the life of a codebreaker and how their work was used to influence battles and policy, changing the course of the war.
- Spend the day at Bletchley and get a glimpse into the life of a codebreaker
- Learn about the role of code-breakers in the Battle of Britain at Bentley Priory Museum
- Explore the bunker hidden beneath Westminster, from which Churchill and his inner circle directed the war
We meet in central London to drive to Bletchley Park for a full day visit. The nineteenth-century mansion became the home of British code-breaking in the Second World War and the birthplace of modern information technology. The work done here changed the course of the war and we spend the day exploring the lives of those who worked here, the skills and methods they used, and of course see the iconic Enigma machine. In the evening we check in to our nearby hotel and enjoy our first group dinner together, with the company of a special guest.

We check out this morning and begin our journey towards London, stopping first at Bentley Priory Museum. Famous as the nerve centre of the Battle of Britain, the site also has connections to the GC&CS. After lunch, we continue on to the Hillingdon Battle of Britain Bunker, where, again, we learn how the use of code-breaking to anticipate bombers was crucial to the battle. Upon arrival in London we check into our hotel and have dinner.
