The Holocaust: Berlin & Krakow

One of the most infamous tragedies of the twentieth century, the Holocaust was a wicked plan carefully organised and coldly executed by the Nazis. On this tour we follow the tragedy, from the conference at Wannsee to plan the Final Solution, to the final fate of the victims in the extermination camps. In between, we hear a few stories of human kindness and bravery of those who tried to protect the victims. This is a tough but enlightening journey through two fascinating cities in Germany and Poland.

  • Visit Wannsee villa, the mansion where senior Nazis planned the Final Solution
  • Learn about the heroes who tried to protect victims of the Holocaust, including Oskar Schindler and Otto Weidt
  • Learn about Jewish culture at the Galicia Museum, with the chance to meet a witness to the persecution

Itinerary 2019

Day 1

We fly from London to Berlin, arriving in the early afternoon. After checking in at our hotel, our Guide Lecturer takes us on a walking tour of the local sites before a welcome lecture and dinner at our hotel.

Hotel: John F Arcotel, Berlin
Meals: Dinner included

Day 2

We start the day with a drive out of town to the Wannsee villa. It was here, in 1942, that the Final Solution was planned out by senior members of the Nazi administration and SS. Now a museum and educational centre, we explore the mansion and learn about how the Holocaust was planned and put into action. After lunch we visit the Holocaust Memorial and its museum beneath, where personal stories of those persecuted are highlighted. Particularly moving is the Room of Names, where a short biography of each victim is projected on the walls and read aloud. To complete all 6 million of the biographies takes 6 years, 7 months, and 27 days. Before dinner this evening there is time to visit the Otto Weidt Museum, dedicated to Otto Weidt and his heroic efforts to save the Jewish workers in his factory.

Hotel: John F Arcotel, Berlin
Meals: All meals included

Day 3

This morning, we follow the journey made by many of the 55,000 Berlin Jews who were murdered in the Holocaust, visiting the site of the transit camp where they were processed before making a moving visit to the “Gleis 17” memorial, the railway siding from which they were deported to their fate. In the afternoon, we visit the Topography of Terror, formerly the location of the SS and Gestapo headquarters, which is now an excellent museum. There, we will learn about the planning of the persecution and extermination of Europe’s Jews.

Hotel: John F Arcotel, Berlin
Meals: Breakfast & lunch included

Day 4

Berlin has so much to offer, so there is free time this morning to explore. We meet back up in the early afternoon for our connecting flight to Kraków.

Hotel: Overnight in Kraków
Meals: Breakfast & dinner included

Day 5

Today is dedicated to the world’s most notorious historic site; the concentration and extermination camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Here, over a million Jews from all over Europe were exterminated in the gas chambers, worked to death, or driven to succumb to disease and starvation. We will tour the site with our expert guide.

Hotel: Overnight in Kraków
Meals: All meals included

Day 6

We spend the day in the Jewish quarter of Kraków, first at Oskar Schindler’s factory, which is now a museum devoted to his heroic actions to save over a thousand Jews from persecution. After lunch we spend time in the Podgórze Ghetto and Hero’s Square before heading out to Płaszów, the site of a lesser known concentration camp on the outskirts of Kraków.

Hotel: Overnight in Kraków
Meals: All meals included

Day 7

We start the morning at the Galicia Museum in the Jewish district of Kraków. The photo exhibition here documents the Jewish culture and life in Polish Galicia, which used to thrive in this area. We also have the chance to meet a “witness to history” who can share their memories with us. There will be free time to explore the beautiful city of Kraków before our evening flight home.
