Jersey: Occupation & War Tunnels

  • Visit the War Tunnels, the underground complex built by the Germans which is now home to exhibits about the occupation
  • Visit a selection of bunkers at night, and get the chance to handle wartime weapons and equipment
  • Stay at the Pomme d’Or hotel, which was used as the German Naval HQ during the occupation and where the Union Jack was raised on Liberation Day

The German occupation of Jersey lasted for most of the Second World War. After Churchill demilitarised the island, considering it of little strategic importance and aiming to avoid the loss of life in any conflict, the Germans took hold from 30th June 1940 and remained until defeat on 9th May 1945. Cut off from the mainland, islanders had little news from the front, especially as Germans outlawed the use of radios. As the war progressed, shortages in supplies, such as food and petrol, made life increasingly difficult, worsening after D-Day cut off German supply lines. Lead by our expert guide, we learn about life in the only British territory to fall to the Germans during the Second World War, from Nazi fortifications to citizens coping with life under the occupation.

Itinerary 2019

Day 1

Arrive in Jersey in time for lunch at our hotel, followed by an introductory lecture and orientation tour of St Helier. There will be some free time before dinner this evening.

Hotel: Pomme d'Or, St Helier
Meals: Lunch & dinner included

Day 2

We start the morning with a visit to the War Tunnels. This underground complex built by the Germans now houses exhibits on life in Jersey during the occupation and is unmissable on any visit to the island. After lunch, we continue to the Channel Islands Military Museum, which displays weaponry and medical equipment as well as other wartime objects inside a restored German bunker. We have an early dinner this evening as we venture out afterwards on a night-time bunker tour. Including at least three bunker sites after dark, there will also be a chance to handle authentic Second World War weaponry, mines, and artefacts.

Hotel: Pomme d'Or, St Helier
Meals: All meals included

Day 3

This morning our Guide Lecturer takes us on a tour to uncover some of the personal stories of islanders during the occupation. We learn how locals learned to live with their occupiers, particularly as the war progressed and food and supplies became ever scarcer. We enjoy lunch at a café on our way to Corbiere lighthouse. It is here that one of the strongest Infantry Strongpoints in Jersey was based, and we spend the afternoon exploring the fortifications.

Hotel: Pomme d'Or, St Helier
Meals: All meals included

Day 4

Today is free to explore independently. Take an excursion to Mont Orgueil Castle, visit the Maritime Museum in St Helier, or simply relax at the hotel. We meet back in the late afternoon to transfer back to the airport and fly home.

Meals: Lunch & dinner included
