Second World War in the Air: The Dam Busters

Featured in the film The Dam Busters, Operation Chastise was a raid on German dams in May 1943, and an iconic part of the Second World War. No. 617 Squadron used the purpose-built “bouncing bomb” to attack the Möhne, Eder, and Sorpe dams. Sorpe dam sustained severe damage, but Möhne and Eder were both breached causing catastrophic flooding of the Ruhr and Eder valleys. Follow the Dam Busters’ story, from development of the bomb by Barnes Wallis, to preparations in Lincolnshire, and finally the raid on the dams. Led by Colonel Paul Beaver, a former trustee of the International Bomber Command Centre, and with special guest Mary Stopes-Roe, daughter of Barnes Wallis, we get a deep insight into the squadron and their mission behind the film.
