Romans, Crusaders & Lawrence of Arabia

"All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible. This I did."
- T. E. Lawrence, Seven Pillars of Wisdom, 1922

Jordan lies at the heart of the modern Middle East, yet has remained stable, friendly, and welcoming. It is located where Bedouin nomad interacts with Levantine peasant, where rival civilisations and empires have clashed over thousands of years. The result is a landscape rich in battlefields, fortifications, and military history.

This tour explores three periods of conflict – under the Roman and Byzantine Empires, the time of the Crusades, and, above all, during Lawrence of Arabia’s campaigns in 1916-18.

Exclusive access to numerous remote desert locations to see the fortified stations, hilltop redoubts, and abandoned campsites of ‘Lawrence of Arabia’s War’. With Lawrence’s great memoir Seven Pillars of Wisdom in hand, we will track the raids, ambushes, and battles in a way that has never previously been possible.

  • A unique tour charting the history of Jordan from the Romans to T.E. Lawrence.
  • Visit Petra, the Wadi Rum, the route of the Hejaz Railway, Aqaba Fort and many other iconic sites.

"Neil was excellent. He is an expert in his field. He is enthusiastic and has a natural ability to communicate information and knowledge in an engaging way. I am a little deaf but I managed to understand Neil very well. He inspired us with detailed his knowledge and enthusiasm for Lawrence."

"Neil Faulkner did an outstanding job of keeping the tour organized. But more than that, he was able to convey a sense of what life was like in that time, what the political and military ramifications were, and how Lawrence conducted his personal and professional relationships. One of the most effective things Neil did was to read cogent passages from Seven Pillars of Wisdom to illustrate a place or situation in Lawrence's own words."
